Tiger Cats - Distribution

Tiger Cats are found in a wide variety of habitats throughout Asia. The geographic range of Tigers includes China, Russia (Siberia), Sumatra, Bangladesh and India. Once Tigers were found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and other parts of Indonesia. They inhabit jungle, tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, grasslands, savannahs, and rocky terrain - all habitats that can provide them with enough prey, water and shelter.

Tiger Cats - Habits

Tigers spend their days sleeping and staying cool by swimming in rivers. At dusk they begin to hunt and often patrol water holes waiting for deer and other prey. The hunting technique for all Tigers is hiding motionless in the grass and ambush the prey. Usually ill or young animals fall a prey for Tigers. Often Tigers unite for a kill and share the quarry according to their status.

Tigers communicate with a variety of sounds. Roaring often means that a Tiger cat has made a kill or it seeking to attract a mate during the mating season. Tigers make short loud purrs when they are content, hisses or moans when they are angry.

Tigers are solitary territorial animals. Their social system is not very complex and the basic social unit is the mother and her young. The home ranges of Tigers depend on the amount of food available and may reach up to 100 sq. miles for males and up to 20 sq. miles for females. The male's range may overlap those of several females. Tiger cats mark their territory with scratches and scent markings.
