Tiger (Pantera Tigris) cats' bodies range in length from 140 cm to 280 cm with a tail length of 60-100 cm. Males weigh up to 300 kg and females reach up to 160 kg. There are 8 species of Tigers and some of them are possibly extinct: the Siberian (or Amur), the Bengal, the Sumatrian, the South Chinese, and the Indo-Chinese are scarce; the Caspian, the Javan and the Balinese are extinct since the 1950's.

The Siberian Tiger is the largest living cat in the world. All Tigers have similar coat pattern: the upperparts and flanks are reddish or orange with dark brown or black stripes, the underparts are white or creamy. The pattern of each animal is unique. Sometimes Tigers come in a whitish variety with black stripes and blue eyes. Very rarely Tigers without any stripes occur.

All Tigers are excellent swimmers, climbers and hunters. Their sight and hearing are very keen. The Tigers' body is designed in such a way to aid in hunting and killing. The hind legs are longer than the foreleg that allows jumping further. Jaws and shoulders are very strong to drag the kill up to trees. Sharp retractile claws and large teeth help to hold onto the prey once the attack is made. The Tiger cat's bite is deadly. Tiger cats have a loose skin on the belly that prevents them from being kicked by the hooves of the prey.
