All 5 living subspecies of Tiger cats are endangered and 3 subspecies have already become extinct. The main problem that Tigers face is habitat loss through deforestation, pollution, human encounters and separation of small groups that prevents Tigers from finding mates during the mating season. Tiger body parts are very valuable in traditional medicine of Asia and poaching for the pelts and other body parts is a real problem in many countries.
The wide geographic range of Tigers could mislead people into thinking that these animals are highly adaptable, but every species is very specialized to its own habitat and needs remote areas with no human encroachment. Tigers compete with humans for the prey and in most Tiger habitats hunting of typical Tiger prey is banned as well as hunting the Tiger cat.
Many reserves are organized in various parts of the world, but most of them are small and isolated that leads to inbreeding. The elimination of the Tigers of Bali and Java is attributed to extensive habitat fragmentation and isolation of small populations and widespread loss of ungulate prey.
Tiger Cats - Importance for Humans
Tigers are very important for the wildlife because they serve as balance, without them the rodents and herbivores will consume all the plant matter. But often Tiger cats are shot or poisoned by the native people for livestock predation and for the killing of people.
