Tiger Cats - Diet

All Tiger cats are true carnivores and prefer large prey animals, such as wild boars, deer, pigs and buffalo, but will eat anything they manage to catch. Sometimes Tigers hunt people, especially those animals that are senior or ill and unable to hunt their usual prey. Tigers have a reputation of vicious killers, but that is not true, because the life of Tigers is rather hard. Only 90% of all attacks are successful and Tigers sometimes suffer from lack of prey and may even die of starvation.

Tiger Cats - Reproduction

The reproductive rate of Tigers is rather slow. The female Tiger cat gives birth every 2-2.5 years, but sometimes waits 4-5 years between her litters if food is scarce. Mating can occur any time of the year, but it usually takes place from November to April. Females are receptive for only a few days and mating is frequent, reaching 100 copulations within 2-3 days. The gestation period of Tigers is about 100 days. Females are able to give birth to up to 6 cubs, but a usual litter consists of 2-3 young.

Cubs are blind and helpless at birth and the mother feeds them milk for 3-6 months. At the age of 6 months the cubs begin to accompany the mother and learn hunting tricks from her. Adult males take no part in raising the young and sometimes may even kill the cubs. Tigers become independent at 2 years of age. Females reach sexual maturity at 3-4 years of age and males are considered to be adults at 3-4 years of age. The usual lifespan for Tiger cats is 25-30 years.
